Anglo-Saxon names tended to be made up of two elements, combined to have a particular meaning. For instance, Æthelstan (considered the first King of England united) is formed from Æthel, meaning “noble” and Stan, meaning “stone.”
Within families the first part of a name might be reused many times. It was a sort of marker that people were related – each would get a unique second half, of course. Sharing a name’s first part appeared especially common in aristocratic families. But it seems to have been widespread among Anglo-Saxons.
In the 1000s, when England was conquered by the Danes and then the Normans, new naming practices were introduced and the two-part naming structure fell out of usage.

I think I put this more on SM than I do on any characters, really, but it still frustrates me. She deals with the whole issue in like one paragraph and then it’s dismissed and not really mentioned again. “Meal times were dicey.” If she didn’t want to get into the morality of it, then why bring it up at all? She’s already established that Carlisle can get donated human blood–why not just take the easy way out and say they’re drinking that instead of being like “they’re killing people but oh well I guess we have to accept it”?
The visiting vampires were hanging around for about two weeks. That’s it. Two weeks. And the average vampire only feeds once every one or two weeks. We’re talking only one or two meals here. Two meals and they couldn’t come up with a better alternative than “take Edward’s cars” (Why? Can’t they just run? Do some of these ancient, isolated vampires even know HOW to drive?) and go out of state? And these are all Carlisle’s friends except the Romanians. They know his beliefs. If you were going to stay with your vegan friend, you wouldn’t expect or demand to eat bacon cheeseburgers while you were with him, right?
And yes, I understand that Siobhan and Benjamin and Zafrina would be killing humans somewhere anyway. And the Cullens aren’t responsible for their actions in that case. But when you invite people to your home, it’s different. Siobhan would be killing someone in Ireland, not in Oregon. That person in Oregon died because the Cullens invited their friend to visit. Are they responsible for that? I don’t know, but it doesn’t feel right to me. And maybe there’s no way around it, but if you’re going to bring it up at least EXPLORE it, right? Have Carlisle OFFER them the donated blood–maybe some of the visiting vampires get a kick out of being served blood in Esme’s nicest wine glasses. Show us Carlisle trying to gently persuade them to try the animal alternative. Emmett challenging Benjamin or the Romanians or Peter and Charlotte that he could kill more deer than they could. Rosalie getting someone to accept the Veggie Challenge by bragging about her near-perfect record and implying they could never do it. Something. Edward grimacing and lending them the keys to his cars just felt really off and I don’t understand why SM would bring it up and then just not really go there. If she didn’t want to get into the moral implications–and I get that’s not her focus or area of interest–then just say “oh they’re all eating animals or drinking donated blood.” It wouldn’t change the story at all.
And the wolves are even more frustrating!
Sam: We can’t take that chance. We won’t allow a blood drinker to hunt on our lands.
Seth: Then tell them to leave.
Sam: And inflict the menace on others? When blood drinkers cross our land, we destroy them, no matter where they plan to hunt. We protect everyone we can.
That is said by Sam earlier in the very same book! But then in the end they do nothing because of Jacob’s imprint on Renesmee.
tl;dr: I don’t think it would be unreasonable to ask their guests to go veggie or accept donated blood for the 1-2 meals they would have while being there. And if SM wanted some drama, then have the Romanians or Amun or Charlotte or someone sneak off and kill some people and the Cullens and wolves being Not Happy and asking them to leave. The Romanians for example would probably shape up and go along with whatever if only to have a chance to take revenge on the Volturi.
